PGA
Riviera Maya Golf Club in Mexico will host the 2025 Women´s Amateur Latin
America championship presented by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation from 20–23
November.
It
will be the first time the championship has been held in Mexico after visiting
Lima in Peru last year and three previous stagings at Pilar Golf in Argentina.
The
fifth edition of the championship at PGA Riviera Maya in Tulum will feature the
region´s most talented women´s amateur golfers and the winner will earn
exemptions into three majors in 2026 – the AIG Women´s Open at Royal Lytham
& St Annes in England; The Chevron Championship at The Club at Carlton
Woods, Texas in the United States of America; and The Amundi Evian Championship
at Evian Resort Golf Club in France.
Mark
Lawrie, Director – Latin America and the Caribbean at The R&A, said, “We
are excited to be taking the Women´s Amateur Latin America championship to a
new venue in Mexico. PGA Riviera Maya is a wonderful destination and we are
sure the talented field will relish the opportunity to showcase their skills as
the championship continues its evolution.
“We
are hugely thankful to Grupo Piñero and PGA Riviera Maya for their keen
interest to support the championship and act as hosts. We look forward to
working with the club and continuing our partnership with the ANNIKA Foundation
to stage the championship for a fifth time.”
Annika
Sörenstam, the ten-time major champion, said, “We are thrilled to bring the
Women´s Amateur Latin America championship to PGA Riviera Maya in Mexico for
the very first time.
“This
stunning destination provides an incredible stage for showcasing the region´s
top talent and we are deeply grateful to PGA Riviera Maya for their generous
support in hosting this year´s championship. Thanks to our long lasting
partnership with The R&A, we are proud to continue expanding the reach of
this championship by bringing it to new regions across Latin America.”
Jaime
Sitjar, CEO of Real State and Golf at Grupo Piñero, added, “As passionate
golfers, it is a true honour to host the Women´s Amateur Latin America
championship in 2025 in Mexico at our PGA Riviera Maya course.
“We
are proud to partner with The R&A, an institution we admire for its legacy
and respect for its determination to excellence. This championship represents
the very best of amateur women´s golf and reflects our firm commitment to
promoting this sport and its values both in Mexico and throughout the
Caribbean.
“We
are grateful for the support of two legends like Annika Sörenstam and Lorena
Ochoa, whose presence will undoubtedly be a source of inspiration for future
generations of golfers who will participate in this unique event.”
Colombia´s
Valery Plata claimed victory at the inaugural Women´s Amateur Latin America
championship in 2021, before two players from Argentina – Valentina Rossi and
Ela Anacona – triumphed in 2022 and 2023 respectively. Mexico´s Clarisa Temelo
excelled from start to finish to secure a six-shot triumph at last year´s
staging in Peru.
The
format for the championship involves 72 holes of stroke play with 60 players
invited to participate based on their position in the World Amateur Golf
Ranking® (WAGR®).
The
winner at PGA Riviera Maya in 2025 will also receive an exemption into The
Women´s Amateur Championship (including the leading three players), The Hilton
Grand Vacations ANNIKA Invitational presented by Rolex (including the top-three
players and ties who are age eligible) and the South American Amateur
Championship the following year.
PGA
Riviera Maya, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, offers a spectacular synergy
between the Mayan jungle, natural lakes, cenotes and its two golf courses, one
with 18 holes and the other with nine par-3 holes.
The
Women´s Amateur Latin America championship presented by The R&A and the
ANNIKA Foundation follows the successful introduction of the Women´s Amateur
Asia-Pacific championship by The R&A in 2018. Its aim is to strengthen the
pathway to the very highest levels of golf by providing a platform for Latin
America´s best women amateur golfers to compete against each other.
