The traditional club in the center of the Peruvian capital is preparing to host the most important women´s championship in the region to celebrate its 100 years of history.
The fourth edition of the WALA will be held at the Lima Golf Club from November 21 to 24, 2024. This will be the first time the event is held in Peru. The tournament, presented by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation, will feature the most talented amateur women golfers in the region.
Opened in 1924, Lima Golf Club sits at the center of the San Isidro neighborhood in the country’s capital city. The course is noted as one of the oldest in the Pacific River Basin and is acknowledged as a premier course in Latin America. The 18-hole layout, which also hosted all golf competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games, features narrow fairways winding between tipa trees, bunkers, and lakes, all with Lima’s skyline on display in the distance.
The course that will be presented for the Women´s Amateur Latin America will have a total of 5,920 yards, par 72, and is expected to be in optimal condition for the championship date.
"Lima Golf is one of the most prestigious clubs in South America. In order to meet the standards required for major regional tournaments, the club has implemented significant upgrades to its course and facilities. We are confident that these improvements will make Lima Golf an exceptional venue for the upcoming WALA", said Mark Lawrie, Regional Managing Director for The R&A in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Michael DeBakey, President of Lima Golf Club, said, “Lima Golf Club thanks The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation for giving us the opportunity to host such a wonderful and important event.
The format for the championship involves 72 holes of stroke play with 60 players invited to participate based on their position in the World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®). The final cut to determine qualification will take place in September, specifically in week 35 of the World Amateur Ranking.
The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation organise the Women’s Amateur Latin America championship. In 2016, the ANNIKA Foundation and The R&A partnered to create the Annika Invitational Latin America, which was played until 2019. Due to the success of that tournament, both organizations created the Women’s Amateur Latin America with the main goal of continuing to support the growth and development of amateur golf for women in the region.
