Oct 18, 2023

With less than a month to go until the start of the third edition of the Women´s Amateur Latin America championship (WALA), expectations are growing for an event that has had a transformative impact on women´s golf in Latin America.

With two editions previously held, the Women´s Amateur Latin America championship continues to grow and has already established itself as the foremost women´s amateur championship in the region.

The championship is particularly significant given the winner earns an invitation to play in three majors. All of this is thanks to the commitment of The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation, who have created a high-profile event to promote the development of women´s golf in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The collaboration between The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation facilitated the WALA´s delivery of exceptional unprecedented benefits to women´s amateur golf. This has sparked increased enthusiasm and inspiration among numerous players who see the championship as a great opportunity for their careers.

The Women´s Amateur Latin America championship is one of the great driving forces in the development of women who seek to better prepare themselves to play more tournaments and qualify for WALA through the World Amateur Golf Ranking®, in pursuit of the dream of playing in the most important professional championships in the world.

“Having championships like the Women´s Amateur Latin America that offer these opportunities enriches the region and we hope it will have a strong pull for women´s golf to continue to grow,” said Mark Lawrie, Director – Latin America & Caribbean at The R&A. “There is definitely a greater presence of female golfers at tournaments and there are more events in the past years.”

Annika Sörenstam, the ten-time major champion, remarked, “The significance and growth of this event in the region over the last few years have been tremendous. We look forward to staging another memorable championship and seeing who will earn exemptions into the three major championships.”

The Women´s Amateur Latin America will celebrate its third edition from 15–18 November 2023. The championship, presented by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation, will be held at Pilar Golf, Buenos Aires, and will feature the 60 best amateur golfers in the region.

The WALA 2023 champion will play alongside the stars of women´s professional golf from around the world in three major championships next year: The Chevron Championship (in April at The Club at Carlton Woods, United States), The Amundi Evian Championship (11–14 July at the Evian Resort Golf Club, France), and the AIG Women´s Open (21–25 August over the Old Course, St Andrews, Scotland).
