With three rounds in the books, María José Marín is at the threshold of conquering the Women´s Amateur Latin America presented by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation at Pilar Golf, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The Colombian shot 68, 4-under par and with a total of 206 strokes, 10-under, leads by four over Argentina’s Valentina Rossi who finished 4-under par, 68 today.

“Tomorrow I can shoot another low round,” said the player from Cali after her record round on Friday (65, the lowest round in the history of the championship). And she delivered: it was an almost perfect day for the future University of Arkansas student athlete, with five birdies and just one blemish at the par-4, 18^th hole. A positive week thus far for Majo, who is looking for a rematch after last year’s runner-up finish behind Valeria Plata. “Golf always gives you second chances” is a common saying among golfers, and tomorrow Majo will try to take that chance on a Sunday with a rain forecast.

“This round gives me the necessary confidence for the rest of the tournament. I felt comfortable all week with my game despite a shaky start. My approach shots and my putting are working and that is important in golf, even more so at this golf course where the greens have a lot of movement,” said Marín. Regarding Annika Sörenstam’s presence during the last round (the Suede arrived in Buenos Aires on Saturday morning and offered her traditional golf clinic to all the players in the field), Majo showed a lot of enthusiasm: “It will be an honour to have Annika watching us play, I’m happy. The work that the R&A and Annika are conducting in the region is very important.”

Another player who has an unfinished business with the championship is Valentina Rossi, the best among the local players, after a third place in 2021. The player from the Jockey Club in Rosario also scored a bogey at the 18th (the hardest hole of the day), her only blemish on a scorecard which also featured five birdies that boosted her to the second place. On Sunday she will try to put some pressure on Marín to hinder Colombia’s dominance at the Women’s Amateur Latin America.
